Carport Infill

This project showcases a recent renovation to a Port Coquitlam home.

The second floor of the existing home was built over a post-and-beam carport that did not have proper foundation support. We temporarily supported the house, engaged a geotechnical engineer to provide subgrade design, and a new strip footing was placed. Engineered beams were installed to allow for longer clear spans in the garage. Shearwalls and hold-downs were add to improve the lateral stability of the existing home. The project gave the client the desired functionality of a garage and the house was brought into compliance with current seismic code requirements.

Design was completed in 2024. Construction was finalized by the end of 2024.

Renovation & Repair

This project showcases a renovation and repair to a Vancouver heritage home.

The existing back mudroom was precariously supported on a deteriorated wall with no footings. We added a new strip footing, replaced the wall support, and constructed a free-standing deck. Additional interior repairs, such as reinstating the basement stairs and reinforcing existing floor beams, were also completed to improve the livability of the house.

Design was completed in 2022. Construction was finalized by the end of 2023.

New Coach House

We were the Engineer-of-Record and Coordinating Registered Professional for a 1000 sf two-storey coach house in North Vancouver. The house was framed with typical plywood shearwalls, common lumber joists, and engineered roof trusses.

Design was completed in 2020. Construction was finalized by the end of 2022.

Structural Steel

There’s always a solution in steel!

Our familiarity with steel fabrication processes, analysis methods, and lifting plans has helped develop relationships with local fabricators. We are able to provide safe and efficient designs for all sorts of custom steel projects. We are also able to provide Schedule S-B/S-C when working as a specialty engineer on behalf of the fabricator. Connection design is completed using established analytical methods and through CBFEM modelling with IDEA StatiCa software.

Mark has completed CISC’s “Connections 1: Design of Steel Connections” course and stays up-to-date with current AISC connection design research.

T-Bar Ceilings, Steel Stud, & Seismic Restraint

Commercial tenant improvement projects typically involve infill walls, new ceiling framing, and upgrades to mechanical/electrical components. These “operational and functional components” require seismic restraint.

We are able to work on behalf of contractors to design the support and seismic restraint for interior steel-stud walls, suspended ceilings, and suspended equipment. Our typical drawing package includes standard design specifications along with custom details based on the project requirements. After completing the appropriate field reviews, we can provide Letters of Assurance to the Architect or Engineer-of-Record.

Site Assessments & Structural Forensics

We are often retained to provide structural assessments for existing buildings. These issues may arise due to fire, wind, water, or impact damage. In other cases, the issue is noted pre-renovation or as an ongoing concern by a homeowner.

As part of our service, we review the existing building documentation, observe the condition on site, and provide a sealed assessment report to document our conclusions.
